Rogers legislation focuses on preventing dating violence

Bill would help schools to develop policies and provide education concerning dating violence

INDIANAPOLIS - Legislation authored by State Senator Earline S. Rogers (D-Gary) that would require school corporations to enact policies and educate young people about dating violence was amended and approved by the Senate Education and Career Development Committee by a vote of 8 to 1 today.

Rep. Duncan Recognized with Sunshine Award

STATEHOUSE - Rep. Cleo Duncan (R-Greensburg) received the Frank O'Bannon Sunshine Award today during the Hoosier State Press Association's annual meeting and government conference.

The award, first presented in 2005, is named in remembrance of the late Gov. O'Bannon who died in 2003 during his second term. The prestigious award honors individuals, groups and organizations for their efforts to protect and enhance the concept of open government in Indiana.

Indiana Senate passes redistricting reform legislation; bills move to Indiana House

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita praised the Indiana Senate for passing redistricting reform legislation that would establish guidelines for the legislative redistricting process following the census in 2011. The Senate also passed legislation that would establish a redistricting study committee to examine best practices from other states, including the practice of an independent commission to draw the maps.

Broden tax sale bill passes through committee

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Early this week the Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy committee unanimously approved Senate Bill (SB) 335 authored by State Senator John Broden (D-South Bend) that would protect purchasers of tax sale properties from excessive fees by a third party assisting in the sale.

SB 335 would establish that the money attained from a tax sale bid would first be applied to the taxes and other costs owed on the property, and then to other delinquent property taxes with the remainder to be added to a separate tax sale surplus fund.

Pastors' Statehouse Day Coming in February

STATEHOUSE - State Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Wheatfield) welcomed the Rev. Ed Selvidge to the Statehouse this week as he led the State Senate in prayer before the convening of Tuesday's session.

Selvidge is the pastor of Radnor United Methodist Church in Carroll County.

"Rev. Selvidge is an inspirational leader and I was proud to welcome him here to represent our area," Hershman said.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Average retail gasoline prices in Indiana have fallen 9.1 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.55/g today. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.70/g, according to gasoline price website IndianaGasPrices.com.

Air pollution to be reduced in agreement with glass manufacturer

AG Zoeller: Indiana joins environmental settlement in multistate case

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller today announced that Indiana, nine other states and the federal government reached a settlement of an environmental case with a Muncie-based glass manufacturer. Indiana will receive $100,000 in the agreement.

Mr. Speaker, members of the Assembly, fellow Hoosiers, good evening.   This once a year we gather as a family might, to take stock of our state's health and to assess the performance of our public duties.  The sense of privilege one feels on this podium never diminishes, nor the sense of duty to report honestly and accurately on our family's situation and the health of our public institutions.
