Washington Indiana Sparkles as newest CLEAN community

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The City of Washington is ringing in 2010 with a new designation. Washington is the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM's) newest "CLEAN" community.

IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly presented a plaque and commemorative road sign to Mayor Larry Haag to officially induct Washington into the CLEAN (Comprehensive Local Environmental Action Network) Community Challenge at the Washington Mayor's Office today.

Bremen-based Nishikawa Standard Co. joins IDEM's Environmental Stewardship Program

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Commissioner Thomas Easterly presented a plaque to Nishikawa Standard Company, LLC in Bremen to signify the company's commitment and acceptance into IDEM's Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP).

Nishikawa Standard Company, LLC has agreed to replace 23 automated paper towel dispensers with 19 highly-efficient electric hand dryers which will reduce and potentially eliminate 8,500 pounds of disposable paper towel waste that is currently sent to landfills annually.

Changes Proposed to 2010 Air Monitoring Network

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) suggests adding additional monitors to Indiana's monitoring network to include measuring for lead, PM-2.5, sulfate, and meteorological data. The agency released a draft of the 2010 air quality monitoring plan to the public for comment until June 14th.

IDEM staff use pedal power on Bike to Work day

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Staff from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management will be parking their cars and hopping on their bicycles to join other state agencies and businesses during annual bike to work day, a day set aside to increase awareness of bike riding as an alternative means of transportation.

"We want to draw attention to other ways to get to work other than driving personal vehicles," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly. "Riding a bike can be a healthy and safe way to get to work and run other errands."

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Libraries are a hub of information, circulating books, movies and other materials on a daily basis. Masters of reuse, many libraries supplement their funding by utilizing donated materials.

National Library Week is April 13 - 19, and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is encouraging Hoosiers to consider donating unwanted books and magazine to libraries, rather than throwing them away.
