U.S. to Review Military Aid to Georgia

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2008 –
The Pentagon will send an assessment team to Georgia to determine what role the U.S. should play as the nation's military rebuilds after clashes with Russia, a Defense Department official said today.

Russia Recognizes Independence of Breakaway Georgian Republics

President Medvedev announced Russian recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in a five-minute nationally-televised address, in which he accused Georgia of an attempted blitzkrieg aimed at eliminating the people of the breakaway republics.

Russia Defies Calls for Withdrawal; U.S. Continues Georgia Relief

WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2008 – Russia continues to defy international calls for the country to pull its forces out of Georgia, and humanitarian operations continue, a Pentagon official said here today.

 

Russian troops continue to occupy the breakaway region of South Ossetia, and Russian troops continue to maintain troops in Gori, a Georgian city that is the gateway to South Ossetia, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said.

EU Leaders to Hold Summit on Georgia

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has summoned European Union leaders to talk about the crisis in Georgia and re-examine relations with Russia.

The 27 EU leaders will meet in Brussels on September 1. They will also consider an aid package for Georgia.  France holds the rotating EU presidency.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told German television Sunday that according to her information, Russia has still not withdrawn its troops from Georgia as called for in the French-brokered cease-fire.

Aid to Georgia Surpasses Million-Pound Mark

WASHINGTON
, Aug. 24, 2008 – The U.S. military has delivered more than 1 million pounds of humanitarian relief supplies to Georgia.

 

As of Aug.22, 36 missions had been flown by Air Force C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft as well as Navy C-9 Skytrain, C-130 Hercules and C-40 Clipper aircraft, U.S. European Command officials said.
