Washington Indiana Sparkles as newest CLEAN community

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The City of Washington is ringing in 2010 with a new designation. Washington is the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's (IDEM's) newest "CLEAN" community.

IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly presented a plaque and commemorative road sign to Mayor Larry Haag to officially induct Washington into the CLEAN (Comprehensive Local Environmental Action Network) Community Challenge at the Washington Mayor's Office today.

Outdoor Indiana magazine catches fire

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Outdoor Indiana magazine is hot. So hot, it's burst into flames.

That's the impression the cover photo of the just-released July-August issue, taken by photo editor Frank Oliver, gives at first glance. But relax. No oven mitt is necessary to grab it.

The photo shows Skyler Hill, assistant property manager at Prophetstown State Park, applying a prescription fire to a selected area of the park. The process helps maintain the ecosystem at Prophetstown and various other DNR properties.

State Reports High Levels of Blue-Green Algae at Morse and Geist Reservoirs

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indiana State Department of Health has been notified of an increase of blue-green algae at Geist and Morse Reservoirs in addition to an elevated level of microcystin (an algal toxin) at Geist.

Working collaboratively with the Hamilton and Marion County Health Departments, state health officials want Hoosiers to be aware and use caution when swimming, skiing, or participating in other recreational activities in either reservoir.

White River Fish Kill was Caused by Algae Bloom

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - A fish kill in the White River near Rocky Ripple in Marion County noticed by members of the public late last week appears to be the result of an excessive algae bloom.

Both DNR and IDEM dispatched investigators on July 24, after several reports from concerned citizens. Neither agency found evidence of a spill, but instead found brownish water and scummy algae on the water's surface.

Salamonie Reservoir Sporting Dog Event Coming in August

ANDREWS, IN - Hunting with canine companions is a joy many sportsmen treasure. If you're interested in learning about how to hunt rabbits and squirrels with dogs, attend a workshop at Salamonie Reservoir, August 8, 2009. Jim Heasley of Heasley's Keystone Kennels, will host seminars on hunting rabbits with beagles, and on hunting squirrels with treeing curs and treeing fiest dogs.

New Williams Lake Boat Ramp Open

The DNR has opened a new boat ramp at Williams Lake in southwest Noble County.

The ramp was built on a 27-acre land tract that was purchased last year by DNR, Division of Fish and Wildlife. The site was developed with funds collected from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses.

Located on the lake's west side, the new ramp opens access upstream to Muncie Lake (47 acres), and downstream to Bartley (34 acres) and Port Mitchell lakes (15 acres). All four lakes are located along the south branch of the Elkhart River.
