Coalition, Afghan Troops Kill Militants, Capture Suspects

WASHINGTON, Jan. 2, 2009 – Afghan and coalition forces killed numerous enemy fighters, captured terrorism suspects and repelled two attacks against bases in recent days, military officials reported.

Coalition and Afghan forces killed five militants and detained 10 suspects -- including a targeted Haqqani terrorist group militant and a Taliban subcommander -- during multiple operations in Afghanistan's Khowst and Zabul provinces yesterday.

Coalition, Afghan Vehicles Collide in Kabul Highway Accident

WASHINGTON, DC – A coalition-forces vehicle and a van carrying Afghan civilians were involved in a traffic accident on Highway 1 in the capital city of Kabul today, military officials said. Both vehicles were traveling east when the van attempted to move into the left lane of traffic where it struck the side of the coalition vehicle, according to a U.S. military news release.

Coalition Forces Kill 19 Militants, Detain 11 in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 23, 2008) - Coalition and Afghan forces killed 19 armed militants, detained 11 suspects and destroyed weapons in Afghanistan in recent days, military officials reported. Combined forces killed 17 insurgents during an air assault operation in the Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province yesterday.

Coalition Forces Target Taliban in Eastern Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, DC – Coalition forces killed five enemy fighters in operations Oct. 3, targeting al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorist networks in eastern Afghanistan.  Coalition forces targeted a Taliban sub-commander in Andar district who is known to plan and coordinate bombing attacks in Ghazni province. He is also wanted for helping move foreign fighters into Afghanistan.

In Ghazni, coalition forces killed two armed militants. Coalition forces found several AK-47s and bomb-making materials at the compound.

Afghan Militants Kill Civilian in Eastern Afghanistan Fighting

WASHINGTON, DC – An Afghan civilian was killed and four were wounded on the morning of October 3, 2008,  when militants attacked a village in eastern Afghanistan where coalition and Afghan troops were on patrol, military officials reported.

The firefight started when militants engaged the joint forces with small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Matin, a village in the Pech district of Konar province, officials said.

Poppy-Free Nangarhar Province Shows Afghanistan Improvements

Gates: Three Combat Brigades Available for Afghanistan by Summer

WASHINGTON, DC – Up to three additional brigade combat teams will likely be available for deployment to Afghanistan next spring and summer, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said today. Gates, who provided his assessment in response to lawmakers' questions during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, qualified his answer with a caveat, saying it's worth considering how heavy a military footprint the United States ought to have in Afghanistan.
