Peru Man Injured After Crashing Into a Police Car

PERU, IN - On March 10, 2009, at approximately 7:47 a.m., officers from the Indiana State Police, Peru Police Department, and Miami County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle crash on Strawtown Pike at County Road 250 South, which injured a Peru, IN, man.

Preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Vern Robinson revealed that a 2002 Saturn L200 driven by Patrick C. Evans, 26, Peru, IN, was traveling eastbound on County Road 250 South. Evans failed to yield for a stop sign at the intersection of Strawtown Pike. Evans drove into the intersection and struck a northbound 2007 Ford Crown Victoria police car, driven by Miami County Sheriff’s Sergeant Tim Hunter, 54, Peru, IN, in the driver door. The impact caused the Ford to travel off the east side of Strawtown Pike where it came to rest after striking a utility pole on the passenger side. Both vehicles are considered a total loss.

Evans was transported, by ambulance, to Dukes Memorial Hospital with a complaint of neck pain and lacerations to his head. Hunter was not injured.

“Both drivers were wearing seat belts and air bags did deploy,” stated Master Trooper Robinson. “The use of those life saving devices prevented the injuries in this crash from being more severe.”

Hunter was on duty and conducting routine patrol at the time of the crash.

Master Trooper Robinson issued Evans a citation for failure to yield.

Master Trooper Robinson was also assisted at the crash scene by ISP Lieutenant Matt Bilkey, ISP Chaplain Father Frank Kilcline, and Miami County EMS.
