Seeking that challenge was the main motivator for one young Marine who joined the Corps in January 2002. Staff Sgt. Daniel Kachmar, who grew up in Pittsburgh, said he had a calling to join the Marine Corps.

WASHINGTON, DC – Time is running out to nominate outstanding military spouses for Military Spouse magazine's 2009 Military Spouse of the Year award. As the Oct. 8 deadline approaches, 252 Army spouses had been nominated at last count, along with 74 Navy and 70 Air Force spouses. The Coast Guard, with 22 nominations, was edging out the Marine Corps by one nominee.

Registry Tracks Effects of Embedded Metal Fragments

WASHINGTON, DC –
A Defense Department registry is helping officials gather data to be sure the long-accepted practice of leaving embedded metal fragments in wounded warriors' bodies as long as vital organs aren't threatened is valid. The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology created the Embedded Metal Fragments Registry in December.

Pentagon Press Secretary Hails Passage of Iraqi Provincial Election Law

WASHINGTON, DC - (Sept. 24, 2008) –  A senior Pentagon spokesman hailed today's passage of a new Iraqi provincial election law, which opens the way to holding local elections within the next few months. The law's passage "is another hugely encouraging sign of progress in Iraq," Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters today.

"This is exactly what we have been looking for," Morrell said.
