Troops in Iraq Find Recently Made Iranian Munitions

WASHINGTON, DC –
American and Iraqi forces have discovered Iranian weapons in Iraq that were manufactured as recently as last year, a U.S. military official said today. The yield of Iranian-made weapons consisted of hundreds of rockets and makeshift bombs, Army Col. Philip Battaglia, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division's 4th Brigade Combat Team said in a Baghdad news conference.

Initiative Improves Iraqi Women’s Quality of Life

CAMP VICTORY, IRAQ – A rash of suicide bombings by women in Iraq in 2008 led officials to create a program to empower Iraqi women by fostering equality and the ensuring their basic human rights are met.

 

The first component of the three-part Women's Initiative Program is to reverse the trend in female suicide bombings, which increased from seven in 2007 to 38 last year, officials said.

U.S., Iraqi Forces Prevent Grenade Attack, Detain Suspected Criminals

WASHINGTON, DC - Iraqi and U.S. forces thwarted a convoy attack, detained suspected criminals and seized weapons over the past four days, military officials reported.

 

Iraqi security forces and U.S. soldiers captured a suspected criminal as he was about to attack a convoy Feb. 15 in northwestern Baghdad's Mansour district.

Paktia Provincial Reconstruction Team Reaches Out to Remote Village

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16, 2009 – The Paktia provincial deputy governor, a council member and senior religious leader yesterday loaded into a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter and traveled over snow-covered mountains to a remote village in the Jani Khel district northeast of here.

In a field near the district's only schoolhouse, the three stepped from the helicopter into a foot of crunchy, melting snow and onto the land of the Mangal tribe.

Afghan, Coalition Forces Kill Taliban Leaders, Detain Suspect

WASHINGTON, DC – Afghan and coalition forces killed two Taliban leaders and detained a suspected weapons facilitator in operations yesterday, military officials reported.

Afghan National Army soldiers and coalition forces killed a Taliban commander during an early morning search of a suspected insurgent compound near the village of Khak-e-Safid in Farah province.

Iraqi, Coalition Troops Discover Bombs, Detain Criminals

WASHINGTON, DC – Iraqi security forces and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers discovered an improvised explosive device yesterday while conducting daytime operations in the Mansour district of northwestern Baghdad, military officials reported.

An Iraqi army explosive ordinance disposal unit, along with U.S. soldiers, secured and safely disarmed the IED in the Yarmouk neighborhood.

Afghan Contractor Killed by IED in Oruzgan Province

 

KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan contractor was killed by an improvised explosive device just before Afghan national security forces and coalition forces were attacked by insurgents during a patrol in the Shaheed Hasas District of Oruzgan province, Feb. 14. The district is located approximately 140 km north of Kandahar.

ANSF and coalition forces were on their way to conduct a shura with local leaders when their vehicle struck an IED, resulting in the death of one local national contractor.

Afghan Commandos Capture Suspected Weapons Facilitator in Farah Province

 

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Afghan national army commandos with the 207th Commando Kandak and coalition forces captured a suspected weapons facilitator in Anar Dara District of Farah province, Saturday. The district is located on the far western side of the province bordering Iran.

The Commandos raided the suspect’s compound while coalition forces formed a security perimeter. After the combined force positively identified the suspected weapons facilitator, the Commandos took him into custody.
