Militants Killed, One Suspect Detained in Afghanistan

 

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - Afghan and coalition forces killed an unknown number of militants and detained one suspect during an early morning operation to capture a senior Taliban commander known to operate throughout northern Kandahar province, April 18.

Somali Pirates Fire on U.S. Merchant Vessel

WASHINGTON, DC - Somali pirates fired on a U.S.-flagged merchant vessel south of the Gulf of Aden today, military officials reported.
Pirates attacked the motor vessel Liberty Sun with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. The crew put out a distress call received by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Coalition Medics Treat Afghan Troops, Civilians, Prevent Diseases

WASHINGTON, DC - Coalition forces are helping Afghan civilians and soldiers alike with medical outreach that is curing illnesses, preventing diseases and keeping soldiers and security forces on the job. A Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force Afghanistan dental team provided treatment for Afghan civilians and soldiers in rural villages, while another unit worked to prevent diseases in the area.

Several Militants Killed in Failed Attacks

 

LOGAR PROVINCE, AFGHANISTAN - Eight militants were killed April 11 in two unrelated incidents in Warak and Logar provinces.

In the first incident, militants attacked a Task Force Spartan patrol with small-arms fire and rocket propelled grenades in Sayed Abad District, Wardak province. Seven of the attackers were killed by a combination of indirect fire from a local military base and coalition close air support.

The Fighting 36th at Al Asad Helps With Escorting Convoys

AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq – Texas guardsmen escort fuel convoys around Anbar province every week and build relationships with their Iraqi partners to support coalition operations.

"Fuel is your lifeline. Your trucks, your generators — pretty much without fuel, the base doesn't operate," said 1st Lt. Darnell Reese, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 142nd Infantry Regiment. "And sharing the road's a big part of that."

On the Ground: Troops in Iraq Focus on Schools

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. forces in Iraq increasingly are putting down weapons to build schools in their changing role there. Some of Diwaniya's brightest female students between 13 and 15 years old participated in their new school's opening Feb. 26.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worked with the local government and contractors to open the Irshad Secondary School for Girls.

KABUL, Afghanistan – An investigation into a Feb. 17 coalition air strike in Afghanistan's Heart province has confirmed that 13 noncombatants and three enemy fighters were killed, military officials reported.

A combined Afghan National Army and coalition forces investigation team, accompanied by international observers, inspected the site this week to determine the identities of those killed.
