Staff Sergeant Crawford is a member of the 76th Brigade, COB out of Indianapolis and was on a 12 month deployment to Iraq. During his tour of duty, he worked alongside 18 Iraqi guardsmen and oversaw a crane crew which provided a level of protection all over the base from mortar rounds and indirect fire. When He left for his tour of duty, Crawford hung his ribbon on the light post across the street from the EPD and when he returned he proudly took the ribbon down. Crawford is a 15 year veteran of the Army National Guard. He plans to take the rest of this year off to enjoy with his family and will return after the 1st of the year as a six year member of the Elwood Police Department. Elwood Chamber is coordinating a program for both Edgewood and Oakland schools that would provide students with three new books
The Elwood Chamber of Commerce is coordinating a program for both Edgewood and Oakland elementary schools that would provide each student with three new books to take home this school year.
The Elwood Chamber of Commerce knows the importance of literacy as it relates to the workplace. We want every child to have access to books in order to improve their reading and encourage recreational reading. However, some children do not have the means to order books the entire year. Every month the teachers and students receive a catalogue that has many books that can be ordered from the Scholastic Book company. On this Scholastic book order is a $1 book that can be purchased.
“Edgewood students and teachers are so grateful for the free Scholastic books. There are so many students who would love to order books from Scholastic but don’t have the money to pay for them. This program is a wonderful incentive to get books in the hands of children and encourage them to read outside of school.” stated Principal Mary Hamilton, Edgewood Elementary.
The Chamber introduced a program during the 2007 / 2008 school year so that each child and classroom received two books. This program was received by Chamber members and the community with great success. We achieved our goal! This year, the Chamber hopes to increase our support for this program and give each child and classroom three books.
Bev Groover, principal, Oakland Elementary, confirmed, “The staff and students at Oakland were very appreciative of the Scholastic books they received last year. We are always looking for ways to get books into the hands of our children, and having the community be a part of this endeavor was very positive.”
The cost of three books is approximately $75 per classroom. You can sponsor at any level (one, two, three or more books). If you would like to sponsor a classroom or make a donation, please contact the Chamber at (765) 552-0180 or elwoodchamber@sbcglobal.net. Thank you for helping our children and community take a step toward literacy!

Jury finds man guilty on five felony counts, faces 190 years in prison
EPD Press Release:
Former Elwood resident Steven W. Everling, age 36 was convicted of all five charges against him yesterday in a Madison County Circuit Court jury trial. The eight woman, four man jury took just over four hours to reach their verdicts on three counts of Child Molest, class A felonies and two counts of sexual Misconduct with a minor, class B felonies. The charges stem from sexual relations Everling had with a then 12 year old female near Frankton in 2002 that continued into Elwood until 2006. Everling had been out on bond since his arrest in February, was taken into custody by the Madison County Sherriff's Deputies immediately after the verdict.
Madison County Deputy Prosecutor Patrick Ragains prosecuted the case on behalf of the state. Elwood Police Detective Carl Caldwell who investigated the case assisted Ragains in the trial. Anderson attorney Zaki Ali defended Everling, who now resides in rural Tipton.
Judge Fredrick Spencer set Everling's sentencing for December 2. Everling faces a maxium sentence on that date of 190 years in prison.
