Weather radio frequencies to be changedMuncie transmitter to provide better clarity and informationBy Maribeth Vaughn
mvaughn@chronicle-tribune.comPublished: Wednesday, September 1, 2010 1:07 AM EDTAt a glance

  • What: Those who have National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s weather radios will need to reprogram their radios to the 162.425 MHz frequency.
  • When: Reprogramming can happen now, and must be done by noon Oct. 4
  • Who: Those who live in Grant, Blackford, Delaware, Henry, Jay, Madison and Randolph counties
  • Why: Officials say the Muncie transmitter will provide better clarity and more reliable information.
  • For questions or help: Programming assistance is available by calling the Grant County Emergency Management Agency at 651-2410 or the National Weather Service at 1-574-834-1104.

Weather radios will have to be switched to a different frequency, as local officials are changing the information source for more reliable information and clarity.

Michael Lewis, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Northern Indiana office, discussed the change with Grant County Commissioners on Tuesday.

Transmission will now come out of Muncie, as opposed to “piggy-backing” off the Fort Wayne transmitter.

Lewis said while there is a Marion transmitter that picks up information from Fort Wayne, if people use the transmitter from Muncie, they will get information that reflects the area better and that sounds more clear.

“You start actually picking up counties from the south and west of Grant County, and it’s more representative of the weather you get here,” Lewis said.

He added that the source is more reliable, because now there are more points of failure using the Marion transmitter that connects to Fort Wayne.

The Muncie transmitter will provide signal for all or parts of seven counties: Grant, Blackford, Delaware, Henry, Jay, Madison and Randolph. People living in the counties should reprogram their weather radio receivers by Oct. 4, as there will be no information coming from the old frequency on that date and beyond. They can begin reprogramming now.

If the switch doesn’t work, Lewis said the Marion transmitter will remain intact until April and a switch back can be made.

Bruce Bender, director of the Grant County Emergency Management Agency, said there is no cost to the county to change. Rather, he said the switch to Muncie saves money, because Grant County no longer has to foot the bill of repairs and upgrades of the Marion transmitter.

Commissioner Jeremy Diller was not at Tuesday’s meeting, which was held at 10:15 a.m. because of scheduling conflicts with Commissioners Mark Bardsley and David Glickfield. The meeting had been scheduled for 10:30 a.m., but it was held slightly earlier because Glickfield had to leave early.

Resident Dan Love asked about Diller’s whereabouts, as the Grant County GOP Chairman Jerry Shull last week called for his resignation because of a move to Texas. Love stated the county should get reimbursed for Diller’s pay for the time he was not serving in Grant County.

Commissioner President Bardsley said Love can speak with Diller about the issue next Tuesday, which is the next meeting Diller plans to attend.
